All my batons have wooden shafts. I am aware that batons made from fiberglass and graphite are popular with many conductors. I have owned batons made from these materials myself and feel they are not the best material for conducting batons. Wood is responsive and does not require your wrist to absorb any of the rebound which can cause discomfort over time. As a natural material, wood is my personal choice as both a musician and craftsman.
White Finish - Shafts are primed and then finished with a coat of glossy white paint. Shafts are bright white with a clean shine. Finish is glossy enough to catch the eye but not enough to look cheap.
Natural Finish - Shafts are left their natural wood color. Natural finish shafts are sanded and polished to the same smooth feel as painted shafts and handles.
Shaft Length - Length is actually the total length of the baton (including the handle). Common sizes range from 12" to 15".
Balance - All batons are created to balance within a 1/4" area at the throat (where the shaft and handle join) where conductors grip the instrument. This is the fulcrum (pivot point). Balance here makes the baton feel very light and may be held with little effort. |
